This summer Parts and Crafts hosted a number of different programs, covering all interests from music to robotics. Of special note this summer was the Girls Invention Week program. This one-week program was open only to girls as a safe space for an introduction to Parts and Crafts and all it has to offer. In July Parts and Crafts expanded to programs based around music and technology, allowing children to create their own music as well as their own computer programs. The Science and Spectacle program focused on the basics of physics as well as hands-on learning centered around building sculptures to demonstrate kinetic movements. Parts and Crafts hosted two more programs in August, this time with themes of Imaginary Worlds as well as natural and artificial life. While Parts and Crafts provides an amazing set of options for children in Somerville, these programs do cost several hundred dollars. Thanks to the support of our donors Parts and Crafts provided a great summer experience to 10 lucky Somerville children. Check out a video showcasing the awesome work of Parts and Crafts!

The Mystic Learning Center hosts great programs year-round, but during the summer of 2019 they provided the Summer and School Vacation Camp. This program provided 40 low-income children with a fulfilling summer experience. Running all day, the camp allowed for children to spend time in a safe environment during the day where they also gain experience in everything from sports to art.
Due to the goal of supporting low-income children, the Mystic Learning Center and the community benefited greatly from the support of the Somerville Education Fund. Ordinarily these kids would not have been able to afford a camp for the entire summer, so to be able to supply such an enriching experience for 4 lucky children is a fantastic cause and is only possible thanks to the SEF donors. Check out a video of an amazing summer at the Mystic Learning Center! The summer of 2019 saw Arts at the Armory open a fantastic summer program for young people in Somerville, Arts Discovery Week. Arts Discovery Week, designed for children aged 5 – 10, ran for four weeks and consisted of both morning and afternoon sessions, allowing for children to participate in whichever best fit their schedule. These sessions gave the children an opportunity to express themselves however they saw fit, with classes ranging from molding clay to creating art representing the beauty of the ocean.
This amazing program gave children the opportunity to express themselves artistically outside of a school-sponsored setting. Unfortunately, not every family is able to afford a week-long program. Due to the incredible generosity of our donors, children who otherwise would not have been able to experience these great programs were given an opportunity to expand their creativity. During the summer of 2019 the Somerville Media Center hosted a summer camp for children that focused on introducing them to the numerous forms of media that we consume every day. The goal of these programs was to give kids the tools that they need to lead change in our society. Through learning how to create and produce various forms of media such as podcasts and television, the hope is that the participants leave the summer with a passion for using media to lead change in their communities.
The best way to better the community is to invest in the future, and that is exactly what the help of SEF provided for the lucky recipients of these summer scholarships. Some kids have rich and diverse opportunities to explore fun and learning throughout the summer. Others do not. Summer learning loss. Kids in poverty often close the achievement gap during the school year and fall behind over the summer. Summer should be a time of joy and exploration. While the opportunity to catch up academically is critical, of equal importance is the opportunity for kids to play outdoors, explore, and learn about nature. We can do something about it. The Somerville Education Foundation, in partnership with the City of Somerville, Somerville Public Schools, and Chamber of Commerce is making a commitment to ensure all Somerville young people have access to affordable, quality summer programming. Funds raised this year will go to expand summer programming. Thanks to many generous commitments from various sponsors, SEF has been able to commit to funding the following services for the summer of 2019:
