Suzanne Douglas, Kindergarten Teacher, Healey School
As part of her science curriculum, Ms. Douglas received funding to have Curious Creatures come to visit her classroom.  This project will deepen student learning  through hands-on exploration of small animals brought to the classroom accompanied by a live animal educator from Curious Creatures.

Julia Post, English Teacher, Somerville High School
Ms. Post purchased makerspace materials for her inquiry based, student-directed learning project to encourage students to become lifelong learners.  In this project, students are engaging with mixed media to create various projects based in mindfulness, community building, and self-expression. 

Michael Friedman, Physics teacher and Lead Mentor for SHS Robotics Team, Somerville High School
Mr. Friedman was granted funding to purchase new Lego Spike Prime robotics kits.
The Somerville High School Robotics Team will use these kits to partner with the Somerville High School math course: Intro to Robotics by utilizing and sharing new Lego Spike Prime robotics kits in multiple ways.

Steph shared legendary heart and courage through his love and service to the whole community, with a special focus on young people.  He is a source of inspiration to us all.  These annual awards would be given to community members of all ages who have contributed to Somerville young people in Steph’s spirit and with his values: courage, compassion, and commitment to community.

]]><![CDATA[July 2022 - SEF Celebrates the Calculus Project]]>Sat, 06 Aug 2022 12:51:43 GMThttps://www.somervilleedfoundation.org/news/july-2022-sef-celebrates-the-calculus-projectOn July 29th, SEF board members along with Mayor Katjana Ballentyne, Councilor Kristen Strezzo, School Committee Member Ilana Krepchin, and SPS's Assistant Superintendent of Academics Equity Dr. Jessica Boston Davis attended the End of Program Ceremony for Somerville's Calculus Project. The mission of the Calculus Project summer program is to "use research supported strategies to increase the representation and success of  Black, Indigenous, and People of Color and low income students in advanced mathematics." We are so lucky to have such a great program in our city!  We are so proud of the participating students who worked so hard to get ahead in math and had fun while doing it!

We appreciate the interest you showed in the Somerville Education Foundation and loved the creativity of all the beautiful bracelets that were made!

Diners donated $30 to receive a Dining Passport. 100% of the Dining Passport proceeds directly supported local restaurant workers and nonprofits. SEF was chosen as one of their nonprofit recipients and was awarded $5,000!  We are so grateful for this generous donation!
